According to the Pentagon, a senior Islamic State leader in charge of organizing assaults in the Middle East and Europe was killed on Monday during a US helicopter raid in northern Syria.

The operation was undertaken with Abd-al-Hadi Mahmud al-Haji Ali in mind, according to the statement, since evidence suggested that Islamic State fighters were intending to abduct international officials.

“Though degraded, ISIS remains capable of conducting operations within the region and has expressed a desire to strike beyond the Middle East,” said General Michael Kurilla, head of US Central Command.

There were no bystanders injured, and two more armed men were allegedly murdered during the incident.

Two weeks ago, US Marines killed another prominent IS leader, Khalid ‘Aydd Ahmad al-Jabouri. According to CENTCOM, al-Jabouri was engaged in the planning of attacks in Europe and Turkey.

At its peak in 2014, the Islamic State-controlled a third of Iraq and Syria. Despite defeat in both countries, the insurgency is far from ending.
