Aaron Judge wins Home Run Derby

The Home Run Derby as a part of this year’s Major League Baseball All-Star festivities at Marlins Park was different. Rather than being a dull session of batting practice the excitement surrounding this year’s event was palpable although the reason for that was far from hard to figure out. Rather than trotting out a practically random assortment of players as they have done in years past MLB’s contestants this year all shared some commonalities, they were all under the age of thirty and are expected to be perennial  stars and most importantly they were all prepared to hit the ball a long way while looking like it was fun. The ball did seem to travel farther as well as four separate shots cleared 500 feet (granted they were all hit by event favorite Aaron Judge, although defending champion Giancarlo Stanton hit one 496 feet) but that was not the only intrigue of the night as the opening round matchups were all within one home run of each other. The scores were as follows; Miguel Sano clipped Mike Moustakas 11-10, Gary Sanchez ousted home team favorite Giancarlo Stanton 17-16, Cody Bellinger beat Charlie Blackmon 15-14, and Aaron Judge put out 23 long balls in the opening round to barely edge Justin Bour of Miami whose 22 was the second-best tally of the round.

While the other hitters showed signs of fatigue as the event advanced (albeit still putting on a good show), Judge who is 6 foot 7 inches and nearly 300 pounds looked comfortable throughout as he edged Cody Bellinger 13-12 (he hit second so he only had to hit more than Bellinger to advance) and bested Sano 11-10 in the championship round (he hit second in that matchup as well). Most incredible about his 47 total home runs though is he had one fly ball in the first round strike the top of the stadium which was still rising when it hit the metal that was discounted in a questionable scoring decision. Despite this, I think he is happy with the trophy. The All-Star Game is tomorrow and if it is anything like the derby we just witnessed it will be amazing.
