Police authorities in Vienna have carried out a series of raids and arrested as many as fourteen people following an attack that killed four people in the heart of the city. Officials said that a twenty-year-old man, who was released from jail last year, was shot dead by the officers as he fired shots on the passers-by.

Since the attack, the security has been on high alert in the Austrian capital, and police have launched more manhunts for any other potential attackers. The local law enforcement agencies stated that they now believe that the attacker may have carried out the attack in Vienna alone. The unfortunate attack in Vienna left nearly 22 people injured and four dead.

Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz said that the people who had been killed in the attack included a woman, a young man, an elderly man, and a waitress. Moreover, Germany’s foreign minister stated that one woman among the dead was a German citizen.

Meanwhile, the interior minister told the news reporters no evidence suggests that another attacker was involved in the unfortunate incident. But he further added that it could not be ruled out, and security agencies are further looking into it. Furthermore, the local police are still assessing more than 20,000 videos to find out what happened.

With the unrest in Europe running high, the Islamic State (IS) claimed responsibility for the attack in an online propaganda video. However, the terrorist group did not provide any evidence to support their claim. According to the authorities, Monday’s attack near Vienna’s synagogue continued for nearly nine minutes and ended when the police shot the attacker dead.

Given the security alert in the Austrian capital, the officials decided to close the schools across the city on Tuesday. With flags flying half-mast, three days of national mourning for the victims of the attack have begun.

Following the attack, several reports emerged that suggested that the police officer who was shot by the attacker was taken to safety by two men of Turkish descent.
