Vingegaard mindful of Pogacar’s mind games

Jonas Vingegaard has been identified by Tadej Pogacar as the top contender for the Tour de France. However, Pogacar, the defending champion, refused to engage in mind games just two days before the race commences on Saturday. Pogacar, who won the Tour in 2020 and 2021, faced challenges during his preparation due to a wrist injury sustained two months ago. He revealed that one of his bones had not fully healed, making his Danish rival the natural frontrunner for this year’s title.

During a news conference on Thursday, Vingegaard responded to Pogacar’s statement by stating that it ultimately comes down to who is in the best shape, regardless of who is considered the favorite. In a show of sportsmanship, Vingegaard added, “I can also say he is the big favorite.” However, Wout van Aert, Vingegaard’s teammate from Jumbo-Visma, dismissed Pogacar’s comments as mind games.

Vingegaard emerged victorious over Pogacar last year through a powerful team attack during the ascent to the Col du Granon. This unexpected move left Pogacar stunned and ultimately resulted in him settling for second place overall. Pogacar, known as the ‘Baby Cannibal’ due to his aggressive approach reminiscent of Eddy Merckx, is expected to start the race with full force, and Vingegaard anticipates nothing less from his main rival.

The opening week of the Tour de France promises to be grueling, with challenging stages on hilly terrain, which aligns with Pogacar’s strategic strengths. Vingegaard acknowledged this and stated, “Actually yes, I would expect him to attack (early in the race), a bit like last year.” He emphasized the need for readiness and giving their best effort to see what they can achieve.

Vingegaard may find more comfort on the longer climbs that lie ahead. He expressed his preparedness and satisfaction with his current condition, stating, “There will be a lot of super hard stages. I’m well prepared and I’m where I want to be.”

In conclusion, Tadej Pogacar has acknowledged Jonas Vingegaard as the favorite for the Tour de France, but he refrained from engaging in mind games. Vingegaard reciprocated the sentiment and emphasized the importance of being in peak form. The upcoming race is expected to be challenging, particularly in the opening week, where Pogacar’s strategic advantage comes into play. Vingegaard anticipates Pogacar’s aggressive approach and is prepared to face the demanding stages ahead.
