Warner Bros defends ‘Barbie’ film’s world map as ‘child-like’

Warner Bros studio has responded to Vietnam’s decision to ban the upcoming “Barbie” movie over a map of the South China Sea, stating that the map is a harmless and child-like drawing with no intended significance. Vietnam objected to a scene in the film that shows China’s claimed territory in the South China Sea and decided to ban its domestic distribution. Warner Bros maintains that the map was not meant to make any type of statement and was simply a part of Barbie’s make-believe journey. The film was originally scheduled to open in Vietnam on the same date as in the United States. Vietnamese authorities took issue with the inclusion of the nine-dash line on the map, which is used by China to assert its claims over the South China Sea. Vietnam has previously banned movies that depict the nine-dash line, which was invalidated by an international arbitration ruling in 2016. In addition to the “Barbie” movie, Vietnam has also launched an investigation into the website of a K-pop group’s tour organizer over a map of the South China Sea with disputed boundaries.
