Wawrinka sets up Djokovic clash as Wimbledon clears backlog

Swiss veteran Stan Wawrinka showcased his vintage form at Wimbledon, securing a place in the third round and setting up a clash with defending champion Novak Djokovic. Meanwhile, Alexander Zverev won his rain-delayed first-round match, allowing the grasscourt Grand Slam to catch up on its schedule.

Wawrinka, a three-time Grand Slam winner and former Wimbledon quarter-finalist, defeated 29th seed Tomas Martin Etcheverry in a hard-fought match. Despite having lost to Djokovic in 20 out of their 26 previous encounters, Wawrinka expressed his excitement about facing him on grass at Wimbledon. He acknowledged the challenge but remained hopeful of putting up a competitive fight.

Persistent rain during the first three days of the tournament caused delays and disrupted the schedule. However, Zverev finally played his first-round match against Dutch qualifier Gijs Brouwer, emerging victorious with a 6-4 7-6(4) 7-6(5) win. This result marked the completion of all the singles opening round fixtures at the All England Club.

Other notable performances included Matteo Berrettini’s comeback victory over Lorenzo Sonego, Andrey Rublev’s milestone 50th Grand Slam match win against Aslan Karatsev, and Elina Svitolina’s triumph over Elise Mertens after a brief setback. Svitolina’s success set up an intriguing match against Sofia Kenin, a former major champion.

In addition, 16-year-old Mirra Andreeva advanced to the third round in her Wimbledon debut after 10th seed Barbora Krejcikova retired due to injury. However, Estonian player Anett Kontaveit suffered a disappointing loss to Marie Bouzkova in what turned out to be her final match before retiring from the sport.

Overall, the completion of the rain-delayed matches allowed Wimbledon to get back on track, providing thrilling encounters and setting the stage for exciting upcoming matches.
