According to the World Health Organization (WHO), a Chinese woman has become the first person to die from a kind of bird flu that is very rare in people; nonetheless, there seems to be no transmission between patients.

The WHO verified the infection of a third person with the H3N8 subtype of avian influenza on Tuesday night, a 56-year-old woman from the southern province of Guangdong.

The first two incidents happened last year, and they all occurred in China.

The Guangdong Provincial Centre for Disease Control reported the third sickness at the end of last month, but no details about the woman’s death were provided.

According to the World Health Organization, the patient had been exposed to live chickens and was suffering from a variety of underlying ailments.

Sporadic human infections with avian influenza are common in China, where avian influenza viruses circulate persistently in huge poultry and wild bird populations.

The World Health Organization (WHO) hypothesized that the woman got the virus from moist market samples that tested positive for influenza A(H3) before becoming ill.

H3N8 is common in birds but causes very little sickness in humans. It has also spread to other species.

The WHO said that no further cases were found among the afflicted woman’s close contacts.

Based on current understanding, the World Health Organization believes “the threat of this virus spreading among humans at the national, regional, and global levels is evaluated as negligible.”

All avian influenza viruses must be continuously monitored due to their ability to evolve and spread to new populations.
