Why do I fear Death?

Failures are the most frequent offerings of life. But as long as you are living, life will continue to provide you one thing despite successive failures: that is hope.

death fear

Despite all the miseries of life, I love it, and like most of the fellow beings, I fear both the idea and the death itself. The feeling of not living anymore sometimes robs me of the joy that life has offered to me.

One of the greatest poets of Urdu, Mirza Ghalib, said that “Despite that, there’s a day decided for death, I wonder why I can’t sleep in peace.”

I could not comprehend the meaning of this couplet as a child, but I can do now. In childhood, I considered it was just the reproduction of ordinary reality, a day-to-day knowledge that we possess about death.

But now, when I am actually living through this, during my mid-thirties, and in search of individual glory, both this couplet and the message included tend to haunt me in my slumbers. It must not be the individual feeling as it is shared by roughly each living human being seeking for glory, and those who want to excel in their lives.

Life, Failures, and Death

Failures are the most frequent offerings of life. But as long as you are living, life will continue to provide you one thing despite successive failures: that is hope.

Only death kills the prospect of hope and desire for the pursuit of glory. Only death keeps a human being from shedding the cloak of unceasing failures, and from wearing a new robe of success.

Probably for this reason alone, I fear, or detest, the death that it steals the fundamental right of a human being: the search for glory.

Undoubtedly, the love for one’s life is a part of one’s self, and anyone who says that he does not fear death is simply in self-denial.

Life, Religion, Death

In the eastern part of the world, people tend to be more religious than their western counterparts. You will often witness them leading a life of oblivion during their youth, and they turn religious only in the later parts of their lives.

Is it a coincidence? I doubt it.

In many ways, religion is sandwiched between life and death. If religion gives meaning to people’s lives, then death makes them closer to their beliefs. However, this is a euphemistic way of saying that people tend to come towards religion in their advanced ages due to fear of death.

What Happens When We Fear Death?

But I fear death at a young age despite being still daring enough to delink the eternal sleep from religion. Fearing death is common, but it should not prevail over one’s life as it literally makes you no better than a prisoner being slowly dragged towards the gallows.

Living fearlessly makes people more attentive to their goals, and though life is too short to accommodate one’s ambition, even the pursuit of greatness is worth living for.
