Wimbledon champion Rybakina pulls out of Eastbourne

On June 26, the warm-up event in Eastbourne saw the withdrawal of Elena Rybakina, the Wimbledon champion and the third-ranked player in the world. This has raised concerns about her fitness ahead of the third Grand Slam of the year, which is set to begin next week. Rybakina, who was born in Moscow and represents Kazakhstan, had a major breakthrough last year by winning the Wimbledon title. In 2023, she has steadily climbed up the world rankings.

Rybakina was considered one of the favourites for the French Open, but she had to pull out of the tournament due to a viral illness just before her third-round match with Sara Sorribes Tormo earlier this month. The organisers of the Eastbourne event did not provide any reason for her withdrawal in a post on Twitter. In the round of 16 in Berlin last week, Rybakina lost to Donna Vekic.

In an interview with British media this week, Rybakina revealed that she was still not physically at 100% due to the lingering effects of the viral illness she contracted in Paris. Wimbledon is scheduled to begin on July 3.
