Meanwhile, the World Health Organization also reported the largest single-day rise of new infections with 259,848 cases. On Sunday, the European Union leaders were also due to meet on the third day to discuss the post-COVID-19 recovery fund.

The pandemic has caused economic chaos in many countries; it also saw the G20, the most industrialized group of countries – consider extending debt relief to developing countries hit by the coronavirus pandemic.

In Brussels, there remained a deadlock between the leaders of the member states on Saturday over the recovery plans due to the resistance of rich northern member nations led by the Netherlands.

The virus that was first detected in Wuhan, China, in 2019, quickly spread across the globe in the first months of 20200. In April, Europe and the US saw the first major outbreaks, but as some of the Latin American countries began to ease social distancing measures, it recorded a surge in new infections.

In recent weeks, North America has recorded a resurgence in the infections, mostly driven by the outbreak in the US. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the WHO chief has warned that in most of the countries across the globe, the coronavirus is not under control and is getting worse.

Latin America has now become the epicenter of the outbreak. So far, Brazil has been the worst-hit country in the region with the fatalities passing the 80,000. Colombia, which has recorded 6,000 fatalities, has extended its coronavirus restrictions in several cities across the country in a bid to curb the further spread of the pandemic.

Meanwhile, In Asia, just after a few weeks, the nationwide lockdown was reached, India crossed the one million confirmed cases. Many states have re-imposed partial lockdowns in major virus hotspots. In Africa, Egypt and South Africa have seen the largest outbreaks. But health experts have maintained that the actual number of infections in the continent could be much higher, citing low testing rates.
