Young Child Killed By Lightning Strike

A tragic accident has resulted in the untimely death of a 5-year-old boy. CNN is reporting that a young boy was struck and killed by a lightning strike in North Carolina while his family was vacationing. The young boy is reported to have died from serious injuries at the local hospital in spite of medical professionals best efforts to save the child. The incident occurred around 4pm on Sunday afternoon at Carova Beach, NC. In the process of seeking shelter from the storm, the child was struck on the way to their vehicle.

This is not the first incident of its kind to take place this year. This young boys death is the 21st lighting-related death in the United States this year (12 of which occurred in the month of July). The summer time is a particularly dangerous season in North Carolina, as June, July, and August are the months where lighting is at its highest volume in the state.

Many lightning-related deaths occur each year. ABC 11 News reports that 312 people died due to lighting between 2006 and 2015. 13 of those deaths occurred in the state of North Carolina. Officials encourage individuals to move indoors and stay away from electrical sockets during electric storms. Officials also say that if a person is able to hear thunder, then they are close enough to be struck. When thunder is heard, people should move indoors immediately and get as far away as possible from large bodies of water, likes lakes, pools, rivers, and the ocean. Cars are moderately safe for shelter, but all windows and openings should be sealed tightly to ensure maximum safety.

At this time, the identity of the child and family affected has not been released. In the wake of this incident, all families and individuals should heed weather warnings when vacationing to ensure their safety.
