President Recep Tayyip Erdogan stated on Friday that his government would like to have better diplomatic ties with the Israeli state and added that the intelligence level talks between the two nations continue but he also criticized Israel’s policy towards Palestinians. While talking to the local news reporters, the Turkish President noted that Turkey had issues with some of the top government officials and added that otherwise, the ties between the two nations would have been different if it were not for these issues. Erdogan said, “The Palestine policy is our red line. We can't accept Israel’s Palestine policies. Their merciless acts there are unacceptable.” In 1949, the Turkish state was among the first Muslim nations that established diplomatic ties with the Israeli nation. Until Erdogan’s rise to power, both the countries enjoyed close relations and trade ties. Since his rise to power, Erdogan has repeatedly criticized Israel’s treatment of Palestinians and occupation of the West Bank. In 2010, Ankara cut off its diplomatic ties after as many as ten pro-Turkish Palestinians were killed by the Israeli Defense forces who boarded a Turkey-owned ship delivering aid and ending the embargo on Gaza. Since June 2007, the blockade on the occupied Gaza strip has been in place since June 2007. Even though both the countries restored their ties in 2016, the diplomatic relations between Turkey and Israel soured in May 2018, when the Israeli armed forces attacked Palestinians protesting against the American decision to move their embassy to Jerusalem. Even though both the Israeli and Turkish leadership have exchanged angry remarks, however, both the nations have continued their trade relation. Only recently, in August, the Israeli government accused the Turkish government of issuing passports to dozens of Hamas members and described it as an “unfriendly step”. In 2007, Hamas seized the Gaza strip from the Palestinian National Authority, and since then, the Israeli defense forces have intensified their attacks on the territory. Meanwhile, the Turkish authorities have maintained that Hamas is a legitimate political movement and was elected democratically by the people of Gaza. After a two-year absence, Erdogan’s government has recently appointed its new ambassador to Israel.
