Australia coach Tony Gustavsson expressed disappointment after the Matildas were eliminated from the Women’s World Cup semi-finals with a 3-1 loss to England. Despite a stunning goal from Sam Kerr, goals from Ella Toone, Lauren Hemp, and Alessia Russo secured the victory for the European champions. Gustavsson acknowledged the difference in quality between the two teams but believed that Australia had created as many chances as England. He praised the team’s solid defending in the first half and urged them to be more confident on the ball. However, their dominance did not translate into enough goals. Kerr, who made her first start of the tournament, scored a brilliant goal but was kept quiet by the English defense in the first half. Despite Australia’s efforts, England remained resilient and regained the lead through Hemp. Russo sealed the victory for England with a late goal. Kerr thanked the fans for their support and expressed hope that it would continue. The Matildas now face Sweden in the third-place playoff match. Kerr acknowledged the quick turnaround and emphasized the team’s determination to not go home empty-handed.
