According to the White House, the US will share up to 60 million doses of its AstraZeneca vaccines with other countries as they become available
Following a federal safety check, the doses will be able to be shipped in the coming months. Even though its authorities have not yet approved it for general use, the United States has a supply of the AstraZeneca vaccines.
The government has been accused of hoarding the vaccine when other countries are in dire need. President Joe Biden announced last month that he will share approximately four million doses of the AstraZeneca vaccines with Mexico and Canada, both of which have approved the vaccine.
The Indian crisis has increased pressure on the Biden administration to share US healthcare services. The White House said on Monday that when the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) completes its review in the coming weeks, about 10 million doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine could be released.
Another 50 million doses are said to be in different stages of development. Jen Psaki, a White House spokeswoman, said FDA officials would conduct quality tests on doses until they were shipped at a press conference.
“Our team will share more information about our preparation and who will be accepting offers from here,” she said, “but we’re still in the planning phase.”
The US Offers to Help India
As India fights a devastating surge in cases, the US has already declared that it will supply raw materials to vaccine manufacturers. President Biden promised more emergency assistance “including oxygen-related equipment, vaccine materials, and therapeutics” in a “warm and optimistic” phone call with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday, according to a White House statement.
The United States is also considering providing India’s health service with oxygen, Covid samples, personal protective equipment (PPE), and the antiviral medication remdesivir. Pfizer BioNTech, Moderna, and Johnson & Johnson have all received FDA approval for vaccines against Covid- 19. (Janssen). According to experts, these are likely to meet all of the country’s needs, and the AstraZeneca vaccine might not be needed.
The United States’ handling of the coronavirus pandemic had several flaws, but vaccine manufacturing was not one of them. The Biden administration has a plethora of jabs, and it’s now sharing some of them with other nations.
The decision to ship up to 60 million doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine which has yet to be approved for use in the United States comes at a crucial time, with the United States’ neighbors Canada and Mexico still struggling, and India facing a devastating increase in cases.
Biden’s Regime Participate in Vaccine Diplomacy
It allows the Biden administration to participate in “vaccine diplomacy,” in which it uses the shipments to pressure other countries to follow suit and build goodwill that could help advance other US foreign policy goals.
At the very least, it protects Joe Biden from accusations that the US has turned its back on the planet by hoarding millions of doses that were neither needed nor desired but could have saved lives.
As long as the US supply holds up, the president’s domestic danger appears to be small. It reflects the administration’s growing belief that the domestic problem ahead is persuading all Americans to get vaccinations that are already available, rather than getting enough vaccines.
