- Biles to return to competition in August after two-year hiatus

Four-time Olympic gold medalist Simone Biles will make her competitive return at the U.S. Classic in Chicago on August 5, according to USA Gymnastics. This will be her first event since the 2021 Tokyo Games, where she withdrew from several events. Biles, who won four gold medals at the 2016 Rio Olympics, cited the pressure of expectations and the need to protect her mental health as reasons for her decision. Despite her withdrawal, she still won a bronze on the balance beam and a silver in the team competition. With these medals, Biles now has a total of seven Olympic medals, equaling Shannon Miller as the American female gymnast with the most Games medals. Sunisa Lee and Jade Carey, who excelled in Biles’ absence in Tokyo, will also be competing in the U.S. Classic. USA Gymnastics stated that the registration list includes 12 Olympic and 16 World Championships team roster members, who have collectively won 60 Olympic and World Championships medals. Biles, Carey, and Lee alone have earned a combined total of 46 World or Olympic medals. Biles previously used the US Classic in 2018 to make her comeback after a two-year break following the Rio Olympics.
