Following the murders of black men Alton Sterling and Philando Castile by police, Campaign Zero has launched the Legislation Visualization & Take Action Tool, which tracks legislation addressing police violence.
Campaign Zero was created by Black Lives Matter activists in 2015 to actively push “a comprehensive package of urgent policy solutions” through all levels of government. It focuses on outlining policy proposals to solve the problem of police violence and getting those policies implemented through local, state, and federal legislation. It also releases research reports, statistics, and data analyses to help people understand the problem.
The new Legislation Visualization & Take Action Tool aims to educate people and help them take action. It utilizes a detailed interactive graphic to show the current status of police violence legislation in federal, state and city governments. It then offers a form that allows people to easily find their local representatives, see where they stand on the issue of police violence, and contact them to demand action.
“It’s important that people understand the laws that are in progress,” said DeRay Mckesson, one of the founders of Campaign Zero. “The next step is model legislation so that we can support activists across the country.”
Mckesson said the Campaign Zero’s new tool had been scheduled for a later launch date, but after the murders of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile by police, the launch “became more urgent.”
Mckesson is the founder of We the Protestors, the project that launched Campaign Zero. We the Protestors offers easy ways for people that care about civil rights to become active in the movement.
