A car was abandoned near the Capital Sunday, and the bomb squad went in and destroyed a pressure cooker. Their course of action caused a bang, but the bomb was destroyed.
The people who saw the car called it suspicious in nature and it smelled of gasoline. Lt. Kimberly A. Schneider had blocked off the area where the car was located in order to retrieve the items that were in the car.
Schneider wouldn’t say what the other items were in the car, but that they caused a bang sound. According to The New York Times,
“The lieutenant identified the vehicle’s owner as Israel Shimeles of Alexandria, Va. Her statement said Mr. Shimeles had been arrested by the Capitol Police and charged with ‘operating after revocation’ and that he was being processed Sunday evening at the police headquarters. She did not elaborate on the charge.”Pressure cooker, cap, interior view Schnellkochtopf, Deckel, Innenansicht (Photo credit: Wikipedia)
All forms of law enforcement are involved in the investigation. This includes the F.B.I. Joint Terrorism Task Force to help with the investigation. Pressure cooker bombs was the same type of bomb used in the Boston Marathon bombing in 2013.
If the bomb squad had not gotten involved the results could have been devastating.
