China launches drills around Taiwan in angry response to VP’s US trip

China’s military has initiated drills around Taiwan as a response to Vice President William Lai’s visit to the United States. The drills are seen as a “serious warning” to separatist forces. Lai, who is expected to be Taiwan’s next president, recently returned from the United States where he made stopovers and gave speeches. Despite objections from Taiwan’s government, China considers Taiwan its own territory. The People’s Liberation Army’s Eastern Theatre Command is conducting joint naval and air combat readiness patrols and exercises around the island to test their combat capabilities. The purpose of these drills is to deter Taiwan independence separatist forces from colluding with external forces. Taiwan’s government has not yet responded to China’s actions. Taiwanese officials had anticipated these military exercises, viewing them as an attempt to intimidate voters ahead of the upcoming presidential election. China has a particular dislike for Lai due to his previous comments about Taiwan independence, although he has pledged to maintain the status quo and engage in talks with Beijing. The Taiwan Work Office of China’s ruling Communist Party criticized Lai for seeking independence with the support of the United States. The United States, while not having formal ties with Taiwan, is its strongest international supporter. China has increased military pressure on Taiwan in recent years, including sending warships and aircraft near the island. These drills are reminiscent of similar war games conducted by China in April after President Tsai Ing-wen’s visit to the United States.
