China toughened its tone towards Taiwan following the recent military exercises in the region, warning that independence “means war.” It further added that its armed forces were taking action to respond to foreign interference and provocation.
Over the weekend, Taiwan, which China claims to be its breakaway province, reported that several fighter jets and bombers entered their airspace, prompting concern in the US. Meanwhile, Beijing believes that the incumbent government in Taiwan is moving the island towards the declaration of formal independence, even though President Tsai Ing-wen has repeatedly maintained they were already a sovereign nation called the Republic of China (ROC), its formal name.

On the other hand, when the news reporters asked the Chinese Defense Ministry’s spokesperson Wu Qian about the recent activities of its fighter jets, he stated that the island was an “insuperable part” of mainland China. We further added that the military activities in the region were much needed to protect China’s sovereignty and national interest.
Interestingly, Beijing’s air incursions coincided with the American carrier entering the South China Sea to promote the freedom of the seas. Besides, Wu stated that only a handful of elements were seeking independence from China. Meanwhile, the Taiwanese officials have denounced Chinese threats and military provocations. President Tsai has vowed not to be coerced and defend the island’s freedom.
Beijing routinely describes the island as its integral part and a sensitive issue in diplomatic relations with Washington. Under the previous US administration, the White House ramped up support for the Taiwanese government, including officials’ visits and arms sales.
President Joe Biden, who assumed office a week ago, reaffirmed his support for the island, potentially arguing further escalation with China. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Wednesday reaffirmed the American support for the Asian nations in the South China Sea Dispute with Beijing.
