Chris Christie, former governor of New Jersey, has announced his campaign for the Republican presidential nomination in 2024. He is positioning himself as an alternative to Donald Trump and is not afraid to call out the former president. Christie’s campaign will focus on challenging the GOP front-runner head-on, in contrast to other declared and would-be candidates in the race. Christie criticized Trump’s leadership and broken promises as president, calling him a “lonely, self-consumed, self-serving, mirror hog” who is not a leader. Christie is one of three candidates jumping into the race this week, along with former Vice President Mike Pence and North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum. It is unclear whether Christie’s strategy can work in today’s Republican Party, as many still support Trump and believe he won the 2020 presidential election.
On April 13, 2021, former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie officially filed paperwork to enter the 2024 United States Presidential race. This highly anticipated move from Christie is considered a major step in the potential run to the highest office in the United States.

Christie made his announcement on the BBC Network, speaking on the importance of standing up to challenging times and how he is using his political experience to get the job done. He also highlighted his previous accomplishments as governor of New Jersey, including his ability to work across party lines, and the state’s improved economic climate, reduced crime, and lower taxes.

The announcement has caused quite a splash in the political world. Supporters from Christie’s Republican Party applaud his courage to take steps towards a possible candidacy and believe Christie’s proven record will be an advantage if he secures the nomination.

Other political pundits, however, have mixed feelings towards Christie’s announcement. Although acknowledging his accomplishments as governor, many feel he may not have the influence needed to gain the Republican nomination. Additionally, with President Joe Biden disposing of his predecessor’s policies many feel the Republicans may be better off focusing on a new and younger candidate to face Biden in the 2024 election.

Finally, given the uncertainty around Christie’s possible candidacy, many have suggested that only time will tell if his move towards a 2024 presidential bid comes to fruition. However, one thing is certain – with the filing paperwork in place, the momentum towards the highly speculated presidential run is now in full effect.
