White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan expressed concern about the potential escalation of conflict in the Middle East and the need to ensure the safety of American citizens in Gaza. The Israeli military announced its intention to allow Gazans to evacuate south in anticipation of a ground assault on the Gaza Strip. Sullivan emphasized the importance of providing essential resources and safe areas for the civilian population leaving Gaza. He also highlighted the risks of a second front opening in the north and Iran’s involvement, as well as the United States’ concerns about proxy forces and Hezbollah in Lebanon. Sullivan emphasized that the majority of the population in Gaza is not affiliated with Hamas and deserves dignity, safety, and security. While the U.S. is not interfering with Israel’s military planning, it is advocating for the recognition of democratic rights and adherence to international law. The situation in Gaza is dire, with a high number of casualties and a shortage of medical supplies in hospitals. President Joe Biden’s decision to deploy an aircraft carrier to the region serves as a deterrent to any actor seeking to exploit the situation.
