  • Two choices for the UK government: Green growth or creating more polluting industries.
  • From now the broadband industry should get more investment.

The government advisors have warned that the United Kingdom should learn from coronavirus and ensure funds earmarked for a post-COVID economic recovery. Firms that will follow less carbon emission should get special help as a part of the economic recovery plan to take care of climate change. They also said that if it is possible to keep a major number of the workforce in-home and let them perform from, there would be a great help to combat the increasing pollution. Instead of cars, walking and cycling are getting preference here.

Committee on Climate Change (CCC) says that from now, the broadband sector should get more investment instead of road-building. Along with this, people need to get proper encouragement to reduce emissions by continuing to consult GPs online.

Alok Sharma, the Energy Secretary, has said in favor of green recovery to the recession, and the government may reply later in detail.

How to ensure the success of these measures?

Due to coronavirus pandemic, a lot of people have lost their jobs, and some people are going to face this harsh reality. The committee says that jobless people should get proper training for work in geographically-spread labor-intensive “green” industries, and it includes tree planting, home insulation, ad peatland restoration.  Presently, people in the aviation industry are suffering the most, and if the government took the right measures, lots of jobs and lives could be actually saved.

The letter also adds, “Many sectors of the UK economy do not currently bear the full costs of emitting greenhouse gases.”

According to the green groups, any bailout needs to include a rule that the industry should have the technological solution to its carbon emissions. The letter also concentrates on the broader social themes of fairness and risk.

It also points out that the Coronavirus crisis has highlighted inequalities that the poorer people are in more danger.

The committee also says that the response to the pandemic has affected mainly the same lower-income groups and younger people, and they may face the largest long-term impacts of climate change.

The benefits will be shared widely, and it will not be a burden to any class of society. We should ensure that today’s lost jobs should be replaced by the new ones that can come via this green plan.

Is it really an effective solution?

During this ongoing lockdown period, we have realized that nature can go back to its original appearance if we do not harm it. But lockdown is not a solution. Humans need to go outside and perform to run their livelihoods. But from now, we need to take care that there is little to zero damage to nature from us; otherwise, an environmental crisis can take place any time, and there will be no scope to recover.
