As his COVID-19 symptoms continue to improve, Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador may be able to resume his usual duties as soon as this week, according to a senior government official who spoke on Wednesday.

On Sunday, Lopez Obrador said that he obtained a positive test result for the virus, making this his third known illness, and that he would be taking a few days off work.

Interior Minister Adan Augusto Lopez said that President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador’s health was on the upswing as he was absent from a regularly scheduled press conference.

“We think, and this is what the doctors say, that the president will be resuming his normal activities… before the weekend,” he added. “We think that the president will be able to resume his normal activities.”

Lopez Obrador, 69, who had a severe heart attack in 2013 and had two earlier episodes with COVID-19 at the peak of the epidemic, reported having very minor symptoms from each of those infections.
