Volvo has come out swinging this past year. Between the redesign of nearly their entire vehicle lineup to the addition of a few new models, plus a few concepts for what the future holds, the car community’s minds are collectively blown by what the Sweedish auto manufacturer has produced. Volvo may not be done shocking the masses quite yet, though. Word has it that Volvo’s performance division, Polestar, may have a 600hp monster being developed behind closed doors.
Before we delve any further, it’s worth noting that the 600hp figure is not confirmed and when Road & Track asked about the car, a Volvo spokesperson said the power figure was “purely speculative.” However, it’s not a baseless assumption. We know for a fact that a Polestar S90 sedan and V90 wagon are on the way. We also know that the Polestar division is currently developing a twin turbo four-cylinder and a supercharged four cylinder that is estimated to produce around 450hp. Finally, thanks to Motor Trend, we know Volvo uses an 87hp electric motor in their T8 Twin Engine hybrid system. When all this is taken into consideration, the power figure is definitely north of the 500hp mark.
With a few tweaks here and there and a performance tune, 600hp doesn’t seem like wishful thinking anymore. The S90/V90 is Volvo’s full-size car in its lineup, which puts it in direct competition with cars that have quite the pedigree. However, with horsepower figures like what was previously mentioned, the M5, E63 AMG, and S6 may have some trouble keeping up.
With Volvo refusing to reveal too much, we’ll have to be patient. If Volvo’s design achievements are a precursor to what’s to come from the egg heads in their engineering department, then we expect big things from the Swedes as time goes on.
