When two fishing boats capsized off the coast of San Diego, California, at least eight people were reported to have been killed, according to the authorities that responded to the incident on Sunday.
After receiving reports of fishing boats that were in distress near San Diego’s Black’s Beach, San Diego Fire-Rescue issued a statement stating that a search and recovery effort had begun late on Saturday night. The statement said that the effort was initiated.
A 911 caller reportedly indicated that she and seven other people were on a fishing boat that made it to safety, but that another boat with eight to ten people on board had capsized. This information was included in the statement.
The San Diego Fire Department, the San Diego Police Department, the United States Customs and Border Protection, and the United States Coast Guard all rushed to the scene, where they discovered two capsized panga fishing boats and a large number of bodies strewn across a radius of approximately 400 yards (366 meters).
A total of eight remains had been located by workers, and as of the beginning of the day on Sunday, a number of different groups were still undertaking a search operation
