The handshake between French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Boris Johnson was warm and really long-lasting for Brexit! But words are more important here. Macron dismissed the demands from Boris Johnson to renegotiate the United Kingdom’s exit from the European Union and mentioned it as ‘not an option’. In reply, Boris Johnson said that the vote of the UK to quit the European Union needs to be respected.
Irish backstop continued to divide the European leaders but Macron mentioned it as ‘indispensable’ in a Brexit deal in Paris. He also added that a new deal can be welcomed if everything goes well.
Macron tried to put brakes on Boris Johnson’s proposal to reopen the Brexit negotiations. He also added that there was not sufficient time to search a new extraction agreement by the 31st October deadline.
After getting a clear boost from Angela Markel, German Chancellor, British PM Boris Johnson has arrived in Paris for the Brexit. There Macron told PM that the Irish the backstop was indispensable to the Brexit deal and it was also impediment of the European Union common market.
Irish Backstop
The Brexit deal was signed between the European Union and Theresa May, the predecessor of Boris Johnson. At the Elysee Palace, Emmanuel Macron said that ‘We have to respect what was negotiated.”
After the Brexit negotiations, backstop was there to create a flawless border on the Island of Ireland. Actually, it separates the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. After that, the United Kingdom and European Union agreed on a matter and that is no matter what happens in coming days as the result of Brexit there will be no new physical checks on the border. If the United Kingdom and the European Union do not agree with the final deal during the standstill transition period, the final deal cannot guarantee a soft border.
Present Scenario
British Prime Minister, Boris Johnson said that with the required “energy and creativity we can find a way forward”. Angela Markel said that onus was on the United Kingdom to get an effective plan. British Pm persists that the Irish backstop needs to be ditched in case of a no-deal exit from the European Union on 31st October get evaded. He also added that it can result in leave of the UK tied to the European Union immediately. It can be the opposite of the result of the referendum in 2016 and here 52% of voters chose to leave.
But in reply, the European Union said continuously that this withdrawal deal was negotiated by former British Prime Minister Theresa May and it has also taken in the backstop and now it cannot be renegotiated.
In this case, Mr. Johnson said that his proposal is ‘vital for trust in politics’. He also added that the United Kingdom would control on the UK-Ireland border “under no circumstances”. Though, two popular leaders took their lunch and coffee, walked little through the gardens of Elysee palace together. And after that, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson flew back to his country.
