Lauren James has received a two-match ban for stamping on Nigeria player Michelle Alozie, resulting in her absence from England’s Women’s World Cup quarter-final match against Colombia, according to FIFA. This decision was made due to James’ red card for a stamp on Alozie’s back during the 87th minute of Monday’s game. Despite being reduced to 10 players for over half an hour, England managed to defeat Nigeria in a penalty shootout after a goalless draw in extra time. FIFA stated that “The FIFA Disciplinary Committee has imposed a two-match suspension on England’s player Lauren James…” The suspension will be served for the FIFA Women’s World Cup quarter-final and the subsequent international fixture. James, England’s top scorer in the tournament with three goals, apologized for the incident on Tuesday. The 21-year-old Chelsea player will also miss the semi-final if England advances. The Football Association (FA) declined to comment on the suspension. England is set to face Colombia on Saturday.
