Fans of all ages gathered at Old Trafford on Sunday to pay tribute to Bobby Charlton, the Manchester United legend who passed away on Saturday. They lined up to sign a book of condolence and placed flowers and scarves at the foot of the Trinity Statue. One fan even climbed the statue to tie a red United scarf around Charlton’s neck.
Pep Guardiola, the manager of Manchester City, expressed his condolences and described Charlton’s death as a significant loss for his family, Manchester United, English football, and European football. He emphasized the impact that individuals like Charlton have on and off the pitch, making the country an incredible place for football. Guardiola also mentioned that City will prepare a tribute for their upcoming league match against United.
Other clubs also offered their condolences on social media. Despite the sad news, Manchester United won their game against Sheffield United with a 2-1 victory, and Diogo Dalot scored the winning goal in the 77th minute with a spectacular strike from outside the box. This goal was seen as a fitting tribute to Charlton, who was known for his remarkable long-range shots. The away fans chanted “One Bobby Charlton” after the goal.
Dalot and his teammates spoke about Charlton’s constant presence around the club, as he would often visit the changing room regardless of the match outcome. They described him as someone who brought an aura and respect to the dressing room. Both teams wore black armbands during the game as a mark of respect.
Manchester United is currently discussing commemorative plans ahead of their Champions League match against FC Copenhagen on Tuesday. The club aims to honor Charlton’s memory during this important fixture.
