Ford Motor announced on Friday that it is recalling 870,000 F-150 trucks in the United States due to a potential wiring issue that could cause the electric parking brake to activate unexpectedly. The recall applies to 2021 through 2023 model year F-150 trucks equipped with a single exhaust system. The automaker stated that contact with the rear axle housing may damage the wiring harness, leading to the unintended activation of the electric parking brake. This information was disclosed in a filing with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
According to Ford, there have been 918 warranty claims and three field reports of the wire chafing condition in North America. Among these, 299 cases reported the unintentional activation of the electric parking brake, including 19 incidents while driving. However, Ford clarified that there have been no reported crashes or injuries associated with the recall.
To address the issue, Ford dealers will install a protective tie strap, tape wrap, and replace the harness as necessary. This measure aims to prevent further damage to the wiring harness and ensure the proper functioning of the electric parking brake.
In conclusion, Ford is taking proactive steps to address the potential risk posed by the wiring issue in the F-150 trucks. By recalling the affected vehicles and implementing necessary repairs, the automaker aims to ensure the safety and reliability of its vehicles for customers.
