Chinese authorities have charged the former chairman of the national football association with bribery as part of an anti-corruption investigation into the soccer federation, according to state broadcaster CCTV. Chen Xuyuan, the ex-head of the Chinese Football Association (CFA), has been charged by authorities in central Hubei province for using his position and authority to seek benefits for others and illegally accepting other people’s property and possessions. CCTV reported that Chen’s case is now with the public prosecutor. Chen and the CFA have not responded to requests for comment. Chen also held the position of deputy party secretary for the football organization. In August, senior soccer official Liu Jun, chairman of the Chinese Super League, was taken away by authorities for investigation. In January, two former CFA officials were investigated for suspected severe violations of the law, and in March, two other leading soccer officials were investigated for suspected serious violations of the law. The report was compiled by Ella Cao and Martin Pollard, with editing by Miral Fahmy. The article adheres to The Thomson RushHourDaily Trust Principles.
