Peruvian attorney general’s office said on Twitter that President Dina Boluarte and former President Pedro Castillo are being investigated. They are being charged with money laundering as part of a criminal organization.
The investigation into potential misconduct by Boluarte and Castillo is a component of a wider investigation. They are looking into probable breaches of campaign finance regulations during the 2021 presidential election in Peru.
The news was made when a former Castillo aide notified local media that he had supported Castillo’s 2021 presidential campaign. He also supported Boluarte’s 2021 vice presidential campaign.
The office of the attorney general said that “the alleged commission of these crimes would have occurred during the electoral campaign of Peru Libre,” a Marxist party that helped catapult Castillo to the presidency of the Andean country.
In December, Castillo was removed from office as a consequence of his attempt to dissolve Congress before an impeachment vote. Boluarte became president after his removal and arrest.
She denied receiving illegal campaign contributions over the weekend. Boluarte has also branded suspicions of corruption a “political maneuver” meant to bring down her government.
Boluarte is now under investigation for her probable role in the killings of demonstrators killed in clashes with security forces in the months after she came into power.
