Just Fontaine, holder of most goals scored in a single World Cup competition passes away at 89.
In the World Cup in 1958, held in Sweden, Fontaine led France to a third-place finish. He scored a record 13 goals in only six games for his country.
He his now tied with Lionel Messi in fourth place on the list of all time goal scorers. During his playing days, he was a striker for for Stade de Reims. They have now referred to him “a star of French football, an exceptional striker, and a renowned Reims player.”
Another one of his previous teams, Paris Saint-Germain, stated: “A musing for Just Fontaine to consider. A footballing legend from France’s past who was an icon has passed away.”
According to the French Football Federation (FFF), Fontaine is “the perpetual goalscorer” and “a legend of international football.”
Philippe Diallo, the temporary head of the French Football Federation (FFF), said that the passing of Just Fontaine “plunges French football into great grief.
“He is responsible for writing what is widely considered to be one of the most beautiful chapters in the history of the French squad.”
Didier Deschamps, the manager of the France national football team, reacted to the news. He said Fontaine’s passing “will sadden everyone who loves football,” and he added that Fontaine “is and will be a legend of the French squad.”
A minute of applause will be given in honor of Fontaine at every football stadium in France. The tribute will be starting with the matches in the French Cup that will take place on Wednesday.
