When you buy your box of Thin Mints from the sweet, 8-year-old outside of the grocery store next year, you may notice that you’re paying a little more than usual.
For the first time in eight years, the Girl Scouts organization is jacking up the price. Now one box of cookies will cost five dollars instead of four.
The price change will not affect all 112 councils, however. According to Today, the pricing is determined by shipping costs, ingredients, and the market size and availability of the product.
Though the new price may be an inconvenience for consumers, the Girl Scouts of Greater Los Angeles says the increase was necessary.
“Cookies will be $5 a box, so troop proceeds will increase by nearly 27% to $.95. “Opt-out” proceeds will double to $.10,” according to the GSGLA website.
Other regions agree that the upped price will be beneficial for the Girl Scouts.
“The No. 1 factor was us hearing feedback from adult volunteers that girls had such a great experience selling cookies, but they weren’t earning enough money from them,” said chief marketing officer at Girls Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts Jan Goldstein to Today.
If frequent Girl Scout cookie buyers are still a disappointed, rest assured that there is a bright light at the end of the tunnel: the addition of two new cookie flavors. Rah Rah Raisin is an oatmeal cookie full of raisins and Greek yogurt-flavored chunks while Toffee-tastic is the group’s first gluten-free option.
Girls Scouts members will start selling cookies early next year.
