A racially motivated shooting took place at a Dollar General store in Jacksonville, Florida, on Saturday, resulting in the deaths of three Black individuals. The perpetrator, described as a white man wearing a tactical vest, was armed with a high-powered rifle and a handgun. Jacksonville Sheriff T.K. Waters confirmed that the shooter had a deep hatred for Black people. The victims, two men and a woman, were all Black. Prior to the shooting, the shooter had written multiple manifestos expressing his animosity towards Black people. The weapons used in the attack were a Glock handgun and an “AR-15 style” rifle adorned with swastikas. Sheriff Waters expressed his sorrow over the hate that fueled the shooter’s rampage. The shooter was seen at Edward Waters University, a historically Black college, where he donned his vest and mask before proceeding to the Dollar General store. The Jacksonville FBI office, led by Special Agent Sherri Onks, has initiated a civil rights investigation and will treat the incident as a hate crime. Onks emphasized that hate crimes are a top priority for the FBI as they not only target individual victims but also aim to intimidate entire communities.
