In Turkey, 44 people were killed on Tuesday by a terrorist attack. On Friday, 22 were killed when terrorists stormed a cafe in Bangladesh and held innocent civilians hostage. And now, on Saturday, over 100 people were killed when a suicide truck bomb went through a busy shopping district in Baghdad. The attack is viewed as one of the country’s deadliest in years.
ISIS has claimed responsibility for the attack.
These attacks are all targeting heavily dominated Muslims countires during the holy month of Ramadan, in which Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset for a month, the holy month ends Tuesday night. Muslims around the world are preparing for the arrival of their holiday, Eid al-Fitr on Wednesday.
In Baghdad, after the sun set and everyone broke their fast, people all gathered at the markets shopping and preparing for the holiday, when a truck drove through a building and exploded, which then resulted in the death of at least 125 people and wounding 147 more.
On Sunday, at an outdoor market in the Shaab neighborhood, a second bomb exploded killing one person and wounding five others.
What happened in Baghdad is a tragedy but many citizens are tired of the government not doing anything about the attacks. CNN reports one student, Sadeq al Zawini, who was watching rescue workers pull bodies from the rubble was sobbing and blaming the government, “We’ve had it with the Iraqi government and politicians. They can’t continue blaming Daesh (another term for ISIS) and other terrorist groups. We need a solution” He stated.
Citizens in the country are tired of being targeted for their religious beliefs. ISIS, who state that they follow the Sunni sect of Islam, specifically target heavily dominated Shiite communities.
ISIS has promised a surge of attacks during the holy month of Ramadan. And they have not wasted any time in fulfilling that promise following the Istanbul and Bangladesh attacks.
