Becoming a celebrity and being famous comes with a large array of perks and benefits. Some of those perks allow these celebrities to live out some of their wildest dreams, some in, which may never have happened otherwise.
While some envy the ability to transcend fame into tackling multiple professions or talents, Johnny Depp has criticized celebrities who “piggyback” their established fame into starting a musical career.
Depp told reporters in Berlin, “That whole idea for me is a sickening thing, it’s always just made me sick.”
Many people may wonder, “well hey didn’t I see Depp play guitar on TV before?” Depp has been seen on several occasions joining high profile musicians on stage while he played guitar. He has played with everyone from, Aerosmith, Paul McCartney and Willie Nelson in 2014 alone. He has also appeared on albums made by Oasis, and Marylyn Manson, spanning very different musical genres.
So what makes his actions OK, but others not? Well Depp states that he is grateful for the opportunities presented to him, you will never see the Johnny Depp Band performing live.
“The luxury now is, anybody with a certain amount of success, if you have a musical being, you can go out and start a band and capitalize on your work in other areas,” states Depp, “But I hate the idea, ‘Come see me play the guitar because you’ve seen me in 12 movies.’ It shouldn’t be [that way]. You want the people who are listening to the music to only be interested in the music.”
While Depp’s fame has attributed to these opportunities, what he is essentially getting at is, do not over expose yourself, and do something because there truly is passion behind it. If there is passion behind it people can tell, and they will check it out because they genuinely want to and not because their name is attached to it.
