Kenya’s Faith Kipyegon broke the women’s mile world record by nearly five seconds at the Monaco Diamond League on July 21. She completed the race in four minutes, 7.64 seconds, surpassing Sifan Hassan’s previous record of 4:12.33 set in 2019, also in Monaco. Kipyegon expressed her satisfaction with the race, stating that her training had been going well and the race was well planned. She took the lead with two laps to go and described the accomplishment of setting a world record as amazing. After the race, Kipyegon was embraced by her fellow competitors. This is the third world record she has broken in just two months, including the 1500m and 5000m. She expressed her surprise at her achievements and her initial goal of breaking the 1500m world record. Kipyegon now aims to defend her world title in the 1500m and also compete in the 5000m at the upcoming World Championships in Hungary. In addition to Kipyegon’s record-breaking performance, Ireland’s Ciara Mageean set a new national record in the race, and Ethiopian Freweyni Hailu claimed the bronze medal. Mageean expressed her satisfaction with her performance and stated that she feels in a good place to compete at the World Championships. She emphasized the importance of being in good shape and having confidence in achieving goals. Overall, it was a race where many competitors achieved personal best times, highlighting the high level of performance.
