The San Diego Padres organization will be honoring past achievements before focusing on improving their chances in the playoffs. Pitcher Jake Peavy and former owner John Moores will be inducted into the Padres’ Hall of Fame. This will take place before the opening pitch of the three-game series against the Texas Rangers.
Rangers manager Bruce Bochy, who was the Padres manager during Peavy’s early years, will be watching the ceremonies from the opposing dugout. Bochy, along with Moores and other Padres Hall of Famers, helped build a talented team that won division titles and the 1998 National League championship.
Bochy expressed his love for returning to San Diego and the many great memories he has there. He was a part of the Padres’ family for 24 seasons, serving as a player, minor-league manager, coach, and manager. Bochy is still the longest tenured and winningest manager in club history, although he is best known for his success with the San Francisco Giants.
Now, Bochy returns to San Diego as the manager of the Rangers, who are under the control of former Padres pitcher Chris Young, now the general manager.
Even though Bochy sees this return as a business trip, the Rangers’ main focus is protecting their lead in the American League West. The Padres, on the other hand, are hoping to make a comeback in the National League wild-card race.
The Rangers arrive in San Diego after a mixed performance against the Dodgers and Astros. They currently hold a two-game lead over the Astros in the AL West.
Meanwhile, the Padres finished their season series against the Pirates with a disappointing 1-5 record. Despite this, manager Bob Melvin believes the team still has the potential to make a run and get back in the race.
The series opener will feature a matchup between right-handers Dane Dunning of the Rangers and Joe Musgrove of the Padres. Dunning will be facing the Padres for the first time in his career, while Musgrove looks to bounce back from a recent loss.
Musgrove had an eight-decision win streak snapped in his last outing but has been performing well overall. He has a 2.07 ERA over his last 10 starts and a strong strikeout-to-walk ratio.
Musgrove has had success at Petco Park this season and has a decent record against the Rangers in his career.
