Authorities reported at least two people were killed and hundreds more were believed to be trapped on Tuesday when a landslide happened during a rainstorm on the main road through northwest Pakistan’s Khyber Pass.
“Twenty to twenty-five containers are buried in the wreckage,” Khyber district deputy commissioner Abdul Nasir Khan said. “The wreckage is quite extensive, and our rescue operation is continuing with heavy machinery.”
He stated that authorities in Afghanistan were looking for the corpses of two Afghans. He also said that three additional people had been transferred to the hospital and that the death toll might rise further.
The landslide occurred early Tuesday morning on the main route connecting Pakistan with landlocked Afghanistan, a major transit point for trade between South Asian republics and into Central Asia.
Authorities posted images of truck containers that seemed to be completely buried behind gigantic rock piles.
