This past Sunday 790 people gathered together to break the world record for the largest number of people skinny-dipping in one place. The event took place at Fremantle’s South Beach in Perth, Australia. They broke the previous record held by New Zealand who was able to gather 744 skinny dippers.
While this may be an unconventional gathering for some people, the event was set up to break the world record, but to also raise money for the Butterfly Foundation. It’s a group set out to raise awareness for those who suffer from eating disorders.
One of the attendees discussed how it felt to be their that day saying, “It was very nerve-racking in the lead up, but then everyone started dropping their sarongs and strangely it felt so normal because if you weren’t naked you were the odd one out. It was a very freeing experience.”
Anderson, one of the nudists that day, claims that she has never been naked in public prior to Sunday’s gathering, and that events like this could really help people who are overwhelmingly conscious of their body image. She further stated that the experience was very liberating.
She went on to say; “I had huge body image issues over the last few years and over the last three years I have been working on myself. This was the next step towards embracing who I am. It was like a nude community, there was people of all shapes and sizes when we were chatting to people you didn’t know where to look.”
This was the cities second attempt to break the world record, but ailed to meet the appropriate number last year. Those in attendance claimed that they wished to return next year with an even bigger crowd.
