A woman was kicked out of her local gym after she kept telling other members that a “man” had been using the women’s locker room. The incident occurred at a Planet Fitness located in Michigan, according to Yvette Cormier who told MLive.com.
According to Cormier, she walked into the gym and went to the women’s locker room and “freaked out” because a “man” was using the facilities. Cormier rushed to tell the employees of the Planet Fitness, who explained to her that the “man” identifies as a woman.
Cormier then decided to go over the local gym’s head and contacted the corporate office who told Cormier that Planet Fitness is a “judgment free” zone, and the woman may use the faculties based on who she identifies with, despite her outward appearance.
Cormier kept attending the gym for the next several days after she contacted corporate. While at the gym she kept telling the other women about the incident, and Planet Fitness executives did not stand for her behavior. The corporate office then contacted Cormier this time, and told her that she violated the “judgment free zone” that the gym has established. Cormier is no longer welcomed at their gyms.
In a statement released regarding the incident, Planet Fitness extended their opinion and described their actions by saying, “Planet Fitness is committed to creating a non-intimidating, welcoming environment for our members. Our gender identity non-discrimination policy states that members and guests may use all gym facilities based on their sincere self-reported gender identity.”
This is proof that some people out there truly care about other people’s feelings and that one company can make a big statement for sticking up for someone who may be out casted by some members of society.
