A spokesperson for the German defense ministry in Berlin said on Thursday that Poland has made a request to the German government for permission to ship obsolete German MiG-29 fighter planes to Ukraine.
According to statements made by Defense Minister Boris Pistorius, which were reported by the DPA news agency, Germany will make a decision as soon as Thursday.
Warsaw’s Ministry of Defense did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
At the reunification of Germany in 1990, Germany received 24 MiG-29 planes as a gift from the former German Democratic Republic (GDR). The aircraft was considered to be among the most cutting-edge fighter planes in the world at that time period.
In the year 2004, Berlin handed over 22 planes to the Polish government. One of the two planes that were left after the accident was destroyed, while the other one is now being shown in a museum.
