Real estate heir Robert Durst, was arrested Saturday in New Orleans for first-degree murder. Durst was arrested the night before his documentary was premiering on HBO. Prior to the arrest, he was heard softly saying under his breath, “What the hell did I do? Killed them all, of course.”
Durst returned back California to face a judge for the murder of Susan Berman, who was killed in her Beverly Hills, Calif., home. FBI agents who found him, escorted Durst back to the west coast, and found the heir at a J.W. Marriott hotel.
Durst is the heir of a New York real estate fortune, but has been associated with the disappearances and deaths of three people now including, Berman.

According to the New York Times, Andrew Jarecki the filmmaker of the recent documentary about Durst called “The Jinx” helped with the investigation, and essentially provided the initial evidence against the heir after Durst went into the bathroom and forgot to turn off his microphone. He gave a small amount of dialogue where he started to say, “There it is. You’re caught. What a disaster.” The audio source was not discovered until 2 years later.
When Jarecki heard this audio he told ABC, “It was so chilling to hear it,” and “It was disturbing to hear it. It makes you very uncomfortable to hear it.”
Durst’s lawyer says that Durst stands by the fact that he believes he is innocent, despite the audio evidence saying, “He’s maintained his innocence for years. Nothing has changed.”
Meanwhile, Robert’s brother, Douglas Durst, is relieved that his brother is facing murder charges, telling the press, “We are relieved and also grateful to everyone who assisted in the arrest of Robert Durst. We hope he will finally be held accountable for all he has done.”
Durst has received a lot of criticism and people have been pondering over why someone who has been born into such opportunity would commit such crimes, so late into his life. Even though the murder of Berman occurred back in 2000, Durst is currently 71, which made him about 55.
