- Rioters assault home of French mayor, injure his wife

Rioters targeted the home of a mayor in a Paris suburb, setting his car on fire and launching fireworks at his wife and children as they fled during a night of unrest following a police shooting of a teenager of North African descent. Vincent Jeanbrun, the mayor of L’Hay-les-Roses, was not at home when the attack occurred. The aggressors attempted to drive their vehicle into the house but were stopped by a low wall surrounding the property’s outdoor terrace. They then set their vehicle on fire. As Jeanbrun’s wife and children escaped through the back yard, they were attacked with fireworks. Jeanbrun reported that his wife suffered a broken leg and will require three months of rehabilitation. The mayor himself also sustained injuries while trying to protect his family. The incident is being investigated as attempted murder, but no suspects have been arrested. Jeanbrun’s town hall has been targeted in previous nights of unrest and has been fortified with barbed wire and barricades. Despite the attack, the mayor received support from local well-wishers during a walkabout in the town. He expressed his disbelief at the situation and received words of encouragement from bystanders. The mayor described the incident as “disgusting.”
