Spencer Strider sets strikeout record as Braves beat Nats

On October 1, the Atlanta Braves defeated the Washington Nationals 5-3, with pitcher Spencer Strider setting a new franchise record for most strikeouts in a season. Strider, who now has 281 strikeouts, surpassed John Smoltz’s record of 276 set in 1996. Despite giving up three runs on six hits, Strider’s performance was crucial in securing the victory. The Braves’ bullpen, consisting of Pierce Johnson, Kirby Yates, A.J. Minter, and Raisel Iglesias, also played a significant role in preserving the lead. Marcell Ozuna’s go-ahead, three-run homer in the fifth inning sealed the win for Atlanta. With a record of 104-57, the Braves have already clinched the National League East and home-field advantage throughout the postseason. On the other hand, the Nationals, with a record of 70-91, struggled to capitalize on their early lead, as Strider settled in and shut them down. CJ Abrams and Trea Turner made notable contributions for the Nationals, with Abrams stealing his 45th base of the season and Turner’s single-season team record of 46 steals within reach. The Braves’ offense came alive in the fifth inning, scoring four runs to take the lead. Ronald Acuna Jr. and Ozzie Albies played pivotal roles in the rally, with Acuna setting a new franchise record for stolen bases in a season with 73 steals. Jordan Weems replaced Nationals starter Joan Adon and allowed Matt Olson’s single before Ozuna’s three-run homer, which marked a career-high 38th homer for Ozuna. The Braves’ power-hitting lineup has now hit a total of 305 home runs this season, just two shy of the major league record set by the 2019 Minnesota Twins. Adon pitched four-plus innings for the Nationals, giving up three runs on six hits. In conclusion, the Atlanta Braves’ victory over the Washington Nationals showcased the team’s strong pitching performance, record-breaking achievements, and offensive firepower.
