Spielberg Bringing ‘Minority Report’ to TV?

Steven Spielberg is working on making his hit 2002 film “Minority Report” a TV series. The film was based on a short story by Philip K. Dick. The movie “Bladerunner” was based on Dick’s novel “Do Androids Dream of Sleep?” Dick was the mind behind another box-office smash, “Total Recall.” It was based on Dick’s short story called “We Can Remember It For You Wholesale.”

In “Minority Report” Tom Cruise starred as John Anderton, head of PreCrime. The unit used psychics called precogs to find and arrest killers before they committed crimes. The film won 16 Academy of Science Fiction Awards, including Best Actor (Tom Cruise), Best Supporting Actress (Samantha Morton), Best Director (Steven Spielberg) and Best Music (John WIlliams). “Minority Report” was a huge success at the box office, grossing over $358M.

Max Borenstein is being considered to write the TV pilot for Spielberg’s Amblin Television. Borenstein is known for 2014’s “Godzilla” and 2003’s “Swordswallowers and Thin Men.” Borenstein’s new take on Godzilla pulled in $500M worldwide and has led to work on a sequel that is slated for June 2018.

Persons of Interest,” a CBS crime drama, has parallels to “Minority Report” and may have drawn inspiration from the film. Although both stories have systems of predicting crimes in place, one would think Spielberg’s firm placement in the future would help separate the two shows. 20th Century Fox distributed “Minority Report,” so it may safe to assume Fox would want to carry it, but no official word has been released on the prospective show’s landing spot.
