Eight people were hurt in the Bay Ridge district of New York City after being hit by a U-Haul truck.
Four patients have minor injuries, two patients are seriously injured, and two patients are in critical condition.
According to the New York Police Department, the suspect injured innocent bystanders while evading a police stop.
The incident occurred at approximately 11:00 local time (16:00 GMT). In the area of Sunset Park, a male suspect was arrested.
At a press conference, police described the incident as a “violent rampage”. They do not believe it to be tied to terrorism.
The U-Haul truck was shown on surveillance footage rushing onto a large sidewalk while being pursued by a police car.
Police surrounded the van in an effort to stop it, but the suspect fled after hitting two police vehicles.
According to eyewitnesses, the truck struck people riding two-wheelers and pedestrians.
A police officer was reportedly one of those hit, according to the authorities.
The governor of New York, Kathy Hochul, said that after learning more about the issue, her administration was ready to assist the New York Police Department.
