Wednesday, a judge in Kampala, Uganda freed on bail an American couple accused of abusing a 10-year-old kid. They have been detained since December.
Nicholas Spencer, 32, and his wife, Mackenzie Leigh Mathias Spencer, 32, were originally charged with serious mistreatment and aggravated child trafficking while fostering a kid in Kampala, Uganda.
During their imprisonment, their attorney David Mpanga said that they had been accused of visa overstaying and unlawful employment.
In Uganda, the sentence for serious child torture is life in prison. The couple, who have made Uganda their home since 2017, have refuted all allegations.
The two requested bail release, citing medical conditions that would go untreated in jail. Last Wednesday, Judge Isaac Muwata concurred, stating that their problems cannot be appropriately addressed in jail.
He required them to deposit bail of fifty million Ugandan shillings ($13,000) and prohibited their departure from the country.
According to the indictment, the prosecution thinks the defendants “abusively abused the child’s position of vulnerability” by recruiting, transporting, and housing the minor.
Their trial date has yet to be determined.
