A company that runs background checks for the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) reported that they were the victim of a cyber attack. The company believes that the personal information of DHS employees may have been compromised.
The breach occurred at US Investigation Services (USIS), which is based in Virginia. DHS has stopped all work with the company due to an FBI investigation. A DHS spokesperson, Peter Boogaard, said in a statement, “A multi-agency cyber response team is working with the company to identify the scope of the intrusion.”
He added, “At this time, our forensic analysis has concluded that some DHS personnel may have been affected, and DHS has notified its entire workforce, out of an abundance of caution, to advise them to monitor their financial accounts for suspicious activity.”
According to their website, USIS’s core services include IT support services, documentation solutions, electrical contracting, wireless solutions and training services. USIS claims that it is the largest commercial background investigations provider to the federal government. They have more than 5,700 employees and provide services in every U.S. state, in addition to foreign countries.
