Virtual Wall in Guatemala Against Migration to the United States

To block the arrival of migrants in the United States. President Trump found an original idea. It is about an agreement of safe third county. A kind of virtual wall at 1505 miles of the United States land border. This agreement is signed in Washinton D.C on July 26, 2019. by the Minister of the Interior of Guatemala Enrique Degenhart, and Kevin K. McAleenan U.S Secretary of Homeland Security.

However, Guatemala is one of the most dangerous countries around the world. It is also a crossroad for drugs, human trafficking, and forced labor, etc. Thus in 2018, they reported an average of 101 murders per week. Others studies showed that 97% of homicide remind unsolved. Above all, Donald Trump believes this little country in Central America is the best place of welcoming and using as a waiting room for migrants who want to reach the United States.

To reach his goal, President Donald Trump pressured Jimmy Morales, the President of Guatemala, to sign an agreement of a safe third country. According to the agreement, an asylum seeker who has set foot in Guatemala must apply in Guatemala and remain there, until a U.S. immigration judge takes a decision on his case. Furthermore, anyone transits from Guatemala is no longer eligible to request asylum in the United States since the American administration finds that this country has all the prerequisites to rescue all those fleeing persecution at home.

Some observers find this agreement outrageous. They ironicize that President Trump seems to have magic hands. At such a point, it can transform one of the most dangerous countries in the world into a safe place to welcome foreigners seeking the protection of another country. According to studies, this country hosts the third-highest rate of femicide worldwide.

We might say that the case of Guatemala is not the first action that Trump administration took to block the arrival of migrants on its territory. Before imposing this agreement to Guatemala, Trump obliged Mexico to keep on the place the asylum applicants on the U.S border, while USCIS process their cases. Besides, the American President has forced Mexico to militarize its northern and southern borders to stop migrant caravans attempting to reach the United States.

In any case, the 45h President of the United States is very relevant in achieving his objectives. When he finds constraints to progress, he innovates and invents other strategies. Sometimes he switches to power. It has happened after the American Congress refused to grant it $5 billion to build the wall on the United States’ borders with Mexico.

Because of that refusal, he drove a shutdown of the Federal Government.
It was the most extended in the whole American history. Unfortunately, that strategy did not bring any results. After all, the U.S President used power to reach his goal. He treats Mexico and Guatemala. If they don’t satisfy the Americans’expectations, they will endure severe economic sanctions.
